Kraken Products Compared: Kraken, Pro, Krak, Desktop, and xStocks

Kraken is now a collection of products, not one trading app

Kraken's 2026 lineup includes the standard Kraken app, Kraken Pro, Kraken Desktop, Krak, xStocks, Kraken Launch, and direct onchain token trading. A shared login does not mean every product has the same balance structure, fee model, purpose, or regional availability.

Kraken app: the simple route is not always the cheapest

The standard app focuses on buying, selling, recurring purchases, pre-built portfolios, and account funding. It reduces order-book complexity, but instant transactions use dynamic fees and may include a spread.

The same asset may have a different effective cost when purchased through a limit order on Kraken Pro. Compare the final amount received, not only the fee label beside the confirmation button.

Kraken Pro and Desktop: order books and advanced execution

Kraken Pro provides spot, margin, futures, and advanced order types where available. Kraken Desktop brings multi-chart layouts, depth, and order management to Windows, macOS, and Linux. Installing Desktop does not unlock products that are restricted for the account's jurisdiction.

For most users, the practical distinction is control: Pro exposes the order book and maker/taker fee schedule, while the standard app simplifies the transaction into a quoted conversion.

Krak: a money app, not a Kraken token

Krak is Kraken's global money app. Official material says it supports more than 300 fiat currencies, stablecoins, and crypto assets, with payments to other users through a Kraktag across more than 160 markets.

Krak uses existing Kraken credentials, although Krak payment balances may be segregated from exchange balances in some jurisdictions. Transfers between Krak users have no transfer fee, but a currency conversion can still have a cost. Earn, KrakBacks, card, salary, and referral benefits are region-specific and should be checked in the user's own app.

xStocks: tokenized exposure is not direct share ownership

xStocks are issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited and provide onchain exposure to U.S. stocks and ETFs. Selected assets trade 24/7 on Kraken Pro, while many others trade 24/5. Eligible users can also withdraw supported tokens to self-custody networks.

xStocks do not provide ordinary shareholder voting rights and cannot be moved directly to a traditional brokerage account. The product is unavailable in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and other restricted regions. Absence from a prohibited list does not guarantee that a particular account is eligible.

A practical selection rule

Use the standard app for a straightforward purchase or recurring plan, then compare Kraken Pro when execution cost and limit-order control matter. Krak is designed around payments rather than replacing Pro. xStocks introduce a separate legal and market structure and should not be treated as a conventional brokerage account.

After registration, enable a passkey or strong 2FA, set withdrawal protections, and test deposits and withdrawals with a small amount. Shared access to several products is not a reason to concentrate all funds in the riskiest one.

FAQ

Do Kraken and Kraken Pro require separate registrations?

No. They use the same Kraken account, while product access depends on residence and verification status.

Is Krak the Kraken exchange token?

No. Krak is the name of a payments and multi-currency app, not a token.

Is Kraken app or Kraken Pro cheaper?

Pro uses a published maker/taker schedule. The standard app uses a quoted transaction with dynamic fees and potential spread. Compare simultaneous final quotes for the same amount.

Does every non-U.S. user have xStocks access?

No. Product eligibility is determined at account level. Do not use a VPN to evade geographic restrictions.
